Why is my phone not making or receiving calls?
If you receive a missed call notification on your iPhone but don’t hear it, the issue might be with your phone’s sound settings. However, the party you are calling is not receiving calls at this time. Other home equipment can interfere with your service. Check to see if your computer modem, caller ID box, fax machine or alarm/security system are preventing people from calling you. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded message instead of a live person, it's a robocall. If you’re getting a lot of robocalls trying to sell you something, odds are the calls are illegal.
When your phone connects to a network, you should see your carrier's name. If not, a message of "not connected" or "roaming" might display. When you can neither make nor receive calls on an Android smartphone, the cause might be any number of issues.

When you change your phone number to a different Verizon number, the old phone number is no longer valid to receive calls. Before writing off the phone, try the working cord from the phone that did have a dial tone.
